Passive stretching is a form of stretching that uses an outside agent to move the body. Whereas active stretching requires only you and your muscles, passive stretching requires more. It uses an outside force, such as a strap, a stretching device, a partner, your body weight, gravity, or a wall to push a joint or limb beyond its range of motion. This means the muscles are relaxed while being stretched as opposed to contracted. For example, a partner pushes your leg farther than you could on your own, or you push your arm against a wall, stretching it farther and deeper than you could on your own. You are relaxed and make no contribution to the range of motion, but an external force created by an outside agent, either manual or mechanical, is what stretches your muscles.
